Tigers in the D, Lions in Big D
Leadership Books by Women, Leo's, Chicago, Kerry Carpenter, Stephen Still Sings
Welcome to my weekly newsletter. This week’s issue includes the radio stations on which I appeared, ten dozen leadership books by women, a great local Coney Island chain, a jazz-rock band, a Tiger slugger, and a photo with a musical reference. I hope you like the picks and pics.
The Detroit Tigers are back home in the D today for game 3 in the ALDS with Cleveland. They won a thriller on Monday behind the pitching of the sports star of the last issue, Tarik Skubal, and the hitting of the one in this issue, Kerry Carpenter. Right before Emmanuel Clase’s final pitch to Kerry, I told Barb, “We need a three-run homer!” Kerry immediately obliged, which was either a wonderful coincidence, or a sign that I have untapped psychic powers. Either way, Go Tigs!
The Detroit Lions will be in Dallas on Sunday for a rematch with the Cowboys. The Lions lost last year’s game in Big D due to a ref’s controversial decision to call a penalty for an illegal substitution. That nullified a gutsy 2-point conversion that should have won the game. Perhaps this year’s outcome will be different. Let’s Go Lions!
My brother David will arrive from LA tomorrow in advance of his performance on Saturday at Trinity House Theatre in Livonia. He will be joined by two special guests, including Walfredo Reyes Jr., the drummer for Chicago, this issue’s marvelous musicians.
On Friday, Barb and I saw Katie Pederson at 20 Front Street in Lake Orion. Our friend John Bommarito was there as well. Katie performed in our home on June 28, and we try to catch our previous house concert artists whenever they appear somewhere nearby. As expected, she put on a great show.

120 Leadership and Strategy Books Written by Women
My sixth book, Profiles in Knowledge: 120 Thought Leaders in Knowledge Management, will be published soon by Lucidea. It is based on individual profiles I have written over the past seven years. Along the way, I realized that I needed to focus more on balancing the number of men with the number of women featured in the series. I addressed this in my article, Improving Gender Balance in KM Thought Leadership Recognition.
I was pleased to see that my friend Rachel Happe recently doubled her list of leadership and strategy books written by women from 60 to 120. Coincidentally, 120 is the number of profiles in my forthcoming book. Rachel is one of the 60 women I featured.
As part of Knowledge Management Week, she and I will be part of a panel discussion on Monday night, October 14, 2024 at 9 pm US EDT to discuss a subject near and dear to both of our hearts: communities of practice. The session will be hosted by the Australia Chapter of the Knowledge Management Global Network.
From Rachel Happe:
Back in 2017 I was frustrated by how few leadership and strategy books I could find written by women that were not about being a woman in leadership. It suggested that women were not seen as credible experts on leadership and business more generally. So I curated a list of 60 Strategy and Leadership Books Written by Women, which was also picked up and published in Inc.
Top-selling business books are still overwhelmingly authored by men but there are a lot more options written by women, so I updated my original list. It is by no means comprehensive, but I wanted to highlight some of the new books that have come out since that original list was made, including some of the additions made in the comments to that post.
Restaurant Recommendation
Leo's Coney Island 15131 Sheldon Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170
There are many Coney Island restaurants in metro Detroit, including legendary one-of-a-kind joints: Lafayette, American, and Duly’s Place. There are also chains: Kerby’s, National, and Leo’s. They are all run by Greeks, serve breakfast all day, offer Greek specialties, and of course, serve Coney Island hot dogs. A Coney dog is topped with chili, mustard, and onions.
When our daughter Tracy moved from Michigan to California, one of the things she missed the most was having soup and salad at Leo’s. Last year, when she was up north for our annual family vacation, I brought her some of each to satisfy her craving. She plans to bring her family back home next fall, and I’m sure a visit to Leo’s will be a top priority. Leo’s lemon rice soup is unbeatable, and their Greek salad always hits the spot.
Leo’s Famous Greek Salad: With lettuce, tomato, cucumber slices, pepperoncini, Greek olives, beets, chickpeas, feta cheese and Leo’s famous Greek dressing.
Lemon Rice Soup: with chicken
Marvelous Musicians
My brother David loved this band and bought Chicago Transit Authority (1969), and Chicago (1970). He was influenced by their music in his own compositions and arrangements. We were hooked by "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "25 or 6 to 4."
From Wikipedia: Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968 before shortening the name in 1969. The self-described "rock and roll band with horns" blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop music. They began writing songs with politically charged lyrics, and later moved to a softer sound, generating several hit ballads. The group had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The group has received ten Grammy Award nominations, winning one for the song, "If You Leave Me Now." The group's first album, Chicago Transit Authority, released in 1969, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014. Chicago was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2017, Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, and James Pankow were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame for their songwriting efforts as members of the music group.

Sports Star
Kerry is the latest hero in Detroit after his two-out, two-strike, ninth-inning, 3-run homer led the Tigers to a Game 2 win over the Guardians on Monday. A 19th round draft choice in 2019, he is Detroit’s most dangerous slugger this year. His return to the lineup from the injured list in mid-August, along with Riley Greene and Parker Meadows, helped key the late-season surge by the Tigers.
Baseball analysts are wondering why he is a platoon player. When left-handers start against the Tigers, A.J. Hinch has been keeping him as a weapon to come off the bench against right-handed relievers. This strategy worked out well on Monday.
From Wikipedia: Kerry William Carpenter (born September 2, 1997 in Eustis, Florida) is an American professional baseball outfielder for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2022.
Carpenter attended Eustis High School in Eustis, Florida, where he batted .463 with three home runs as a senior in 2016. After graduating, he enrolled at St. Johns River State College where he played two years of college baseball, before transferring to Virginia Tech to play for the Virginia Tech Hokies for the 2019 season. In his year with Virginia Tech, he started 53 games and hit .272 with ten home runs and 45 RBI.
Carpenter was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round, with the 562nd overall selection, of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. Carpenter signed with the Tigers and split his first professional season between the rookie–level Gulf Coast League Tigers and Low–A Connecticut Tigers, batting .303 with nine home runs and 35 RBI over 47 games. He did not play in a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Carpenter spent 2021 with the Double–A Erie SeaWolves and hit .262 with 15 home runs, 74 RBI, and 24 doubles over 112 games. He returned to Erie to open the 2022 season. He was named Eastern League Player of the Month for May. After batting .304 with 22 home runs and 48 RBI over 63 games with Erie, he was promoted to the Triple–A Toledo Mud Hens in late June.
On August 10, 2022, the Tigers selected Carpenter's contract and added him to the Major League roster. He made his MLB debut the same day as Detroit's starting designated hitter, going hitless over four at-bats. He collected his first MLB hit on August 14, a single versus the Chicago White Sox. Carpenter hit his first MLB home run on August 15 off of Eli Morgan of the Cleveland Guardians. For the 2023 season, Carpenter played in 118 games, batting .278 with 20 home runs and 64 RBI.
Carpenter began the 2024 campaign with Detroit, hitting .283 with eight home runs and 29 RBI across 50 games. He was placed on the injured list with lumbar spine inflammation on May 29, 2024. Carpenter was transferred to the 60–day injured list on July 21. He was activated on August 13. In his return Carpenter hit two home runs against the Seattle Mariners. On October 7, in Game 2 of the 2024 American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians, Carpenter hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off of Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase, who only gave up 2 home runs in 74.1 innings, breaking a 0–0 tie and leading to a 3-0 Tigers win.
